summer camp

Our Goals:

  • Develop an interest and appreciation for the sport of sailing

  • Develop basic nautical knowledge

  • Develop and/or improve boat handling skills

  • Instill a sense of respect toward the sea, weather and wind

  • Polish any skills already acquired before Sailing School

  • Create a safe and fun learning environment

  • For those interested, develop racing skills and knowledge

 

What will Sailing School Provide for Each Student?

  • A fun and safe learning environment

  • Accomplished, USSA certified instructors

  • Boats and other miscellaneous equipment needed for Sailing School

  • Water!

Safety, Swimming and Age Requirements:

  • Each student MUST wear closed toe shoes that can get wet

  • Students MUST bring their own life jacket

  • Each student MUST know how to swim and will be required to pass a swim proficiency test. During the test the student must swim back and forth across the pool,

    tread water for one minute, and be able to put on a life jacket while in the water.

  • Students MUST be between the ages of 8 and 18

Every Day students MUST bring:

  • A Coast Guard approved life jacket

  • Closed toe shoes

  • Sun Protection: A hat and SUNSCREEN

  • A towel

  • A water bottle

  • Lunch*

  • A positive attitude!

 

*Please note that the students are responsible for bringing their own lunches. Mobile Yacht Club is open on Thursdays and Fridays, so students can order food from the Club those days.

All sailing skill levels are welcome.  From beginner to advanced.

CLASS TYPES:

MBSS offers two different session types depending on the student's experience level and age: 

 

REGULAR CLASS : includes day-long sessions (9am-5pm). Students must be ages 8-18 and will learn to sail a small boat called a 420.

SPECIAL OPTI CLASS : This class type is available to beginner and young sailors (ages 7-10). Students will learn on a smaller dinghy called an Optimist (Opti). Special opti sessions are organized into half days (9am-12pm, and 1pm-5pm).

 

****If your child is interested in sailing optis on a full day schedule (not during special opti sessions 3-4), we are now offering 4 opti

       student spots per week concurrent with the full day 420 sessions

​* Each 420 full-day session has 4 additional spots per week for opti students. These students will also be on the full day schedule.

  • MBSS offers a 20% discount from base rate for: 

      Each child beyond the first in a family

      Each additional session per child

  • Classes will go on rain or shine. During inclement weather, students will be trained onshore about theoretical aspects of sailing, knots, rigging, etc.

  • An instructor will be present on the premises from 8:30 am until 5:30 pm every day of camp when students are not on the  water.  Parents can drop off students at MYC as early as 8:30 for the morning session and can pick up afternoon session        students as late as 5:30.​
